The story so far
Sports Field
The story so far
The playing field between Victoria Road, Ash Grove and Chestnut Avenue has been used by people of our community for sports since 1906. For a long time it was owned by Leeds Girls' High School, now merged with The Grammar School at Leeds.

In 2007 the Girls' School closed and joined The Grammar School at Leeds in Alwoodley, LS17. Since then, members of the community have been trying to save the playing field...

Leeds City Council Plans department gave the permission for the site to be developed as housing based on legal advice that they might have been taken to court by the developers if they refused.

This is despite permission for housing is despite:

We are asking you to act, to pledge what you can to show the landowners that people care about the facilities which could still exist here.

With land ownership, a consortium could be eligible for many different pots of funding...

Pledges Are Real
Cllr. John Illingworth, Leeds City Council
"Intensive public use of the Victoria Road sports facilities would allow at least 1000 local people to achieve five additional Quality Adjusted Life Years."
Over A Century Of Service
'The playing field between Victoria Road, Ash Grove and Chestnut Avenue has been used by people of our community for sports since 1906. '
Greg Mulholland, MP for Headingley
"It is massively disappointing to see a development which essentially deprives the local community and local schools of a playing field and venue for sporting activities."
The Space Is Vital For Us All
'FIVE of the local primary schools in Leeds 6 having very limited space for sport on their premises – TWO have no grass areas for children to play.'
Martin Staniforth, Leeds Civic Trust
"The proposal would lead to the loss of valuable green space and recreational facilities in a densely populated area of Leeds. There is a real need for such space for the local community."
No Facilities
'LS6 is a densely populated area with a lack of existing sports facilities. There are NO sports pitches which are publicly accessible in Hyde Park and a lack of sports clubs for people to use.'
